Tashkurgan, Baihaba and parts of the Kanas region sit inside border control zones. Getting in requires a border permit — and the route differs sharply by passport.

This is the detail most likely to derail a trip on arrival. Plenty of perfectly good hotels cannot legally register international guests — book the wrong room and you cannot check in, however nice it looks.

“Overseas Chinese” is not one traveller type. A PRC passport held abroad, a foreign passport, an HK/Macao/Taiwan document — each changes which routes you can take and what paperwork is needed.
