Licensed hotels: not every star-rated hotel may host foreign guests

This is the detail most likely to derail a trip on arrival. Plenty of perfectly good hotels cannot legally register international guests — book the wrong room and you cannot check in, however nice it looks.

Why this restriction exists

Properties hosting international travellers must hold the appropriate licence and be connected to the accommodation registration system. Without that, the hotel cannot complete registration for a foreign guest — regardless of how good the rooms are.

In Urumqi or Kashgar this rarely bites; there is plenty of choice. It becomes a real problem in county towns, around scenic areas, and with homestays — fewer options, and things change at short notice in peak season.

Why peak season needs early booking

Xinjiang’s season runs June to October, tightening sharply in July and August. Licensed rooms are fewer than ordinary rooms to begin with, and around the famous lakes and valleys there are very few. Leave it to the week before departure and you may well have a route you can drive but nowhere legal to sleep.

We lock in licensed rooms at least 20 days ahead in season and take written confirmation from each property rather than trusting whatever the booking platform shows.

Registration

You must be registered within 24 hours of entering China. Licensed hotels handle this as part of check-in, so there is nothing extra for you to do.

Where a route involves homestays or non-standard lodging, we check in advance whether registration can be completed there, so nothing is missed.

How it works

  1. {‘t’: ‘Map your overnight stops’, ‘d’: ‘List every city and scenic area you sleep in’}
  2. {‘t’: ‘Filter licensed properties’, ‘d’: ‘Check which hotels at each stop hold the right licence’}
  3. {‘t’: ‘Lock in early’, ‘d’: ‘Reserve at least 20 days ahead in season, with written confirmation’}
  4. {‘t’: ‘Re-confirm before travel’, ‘d’: ‘Check each booking still stands and accepts your passport’}

How we help

  • Select licensed accommodation stop by stop
  • Lock rooms early in season with written confirmation
  • Phone remote guesthouses individually to confirm eligibility
  • Help complete the registration process on arrival

FAQ

Can I be certain the hotels you book accept foreign guests?

For routes involving international travellers we only use properties already confirmed as licensed, and we re-check before departure. Being turned away at reception is not something we allow to happen.

Can I book my own hotels and just use you for transport?

Yes. But please confirm the property accepts your passport type — otherwise you may have to find somewhere else on the spot.

Do homestays work?

Some do, some do not, and it changes during peak season. We verify each one during planning and tell you the answer in writing.
