Tashkurgan, Baihaba and parts of the Kanas region sit inside border control zones. Getting in requires a border permit — and the route differs sharply by passport.
What a border permit is, and who needs one
Xinjiang borders several countries. Areas near the frontier line are designated border control zones, and entering them requires a Border Management Area Permit. Commonly affected places include the Kashgar–Tashkurgan corridor, Baihaba in Habahe County, and parts of Kizilsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture.
Main tourist cities and major scenic areas — Urumqi, Turpan, Ili, Kashgar city, the main body of Kanas — generally do not require one. It depends entirely on the specific stops on your itinerary.
Why guides online contradict each other
Zone status, which passports are accepted, and seasonal access all change. Blog posts and forums were written at different moments, so conflicting advice is normal. Treating outdated information as current is how travellers end up turned back at a checkpoint with an itinerary in ruins.
Our approach: for any route touching a border zone, we re-verify with the relevant public security authority before departure and confirm to you in writing. That is why this page carries a verification date at the top.
If you hold a foreign passport
This is where trips most often go wrong. Not every border zone is open to foreign nationals, and even where it is, the paperwork, required documents and lead time vary — sometimes from year to year at the same location.
If you travel on a foreign passport, tell us at enquiry stage. We confirm what is genuinely possible at each stop before discussing itinerary details — rather than taking payment first and hoping for the best.
How it works
- {‘t’: ‘List your stops’, ‘d’: ‘Every city, scenic area and overnight point, flagged for border-zone status’}
- {‘t’: ‘Verify with authorities’, ‘d’: ‘Confirm current rules and required documents at each one’}
- {‘t’: ‘Prepare and apply’, ‘d’: ‘Get the documents together and collect the permit at the issuing office’}
- {‘t’: ‘Re-check en route’, ‘d’: ‘Confirm documents again before each checkpoint, since rules can shift’}
How we help
- Confirm zone-by-zone whether your passport works on this route
- Send you a document checklist well before departure
- Walk you through the permit application process
- Handle checkpoint procedures alongside you on the road
FAQ
I am only going to Kanas. Do I need a permit?
The main Kanas area usually does not require one, but Baihaba sits inside a border zone and does. We will sort out whether Baihaba is on your route before you travel.
Can I just sort it out when I arrive?
Mainland Chinese ID holders often can. Chinese nationals living abroad and foreign passport holders generally need documents prepared in advance — we do not recommend relying on same-day handling.
How long is a permit valid?
It varies by zone and issuing office — a few days, per-entry, or a set period. The issuing office determines this at collection.
Are border areas closed to foreigners entirely?
No, not entirely. But which places accept foreign passports, and under what conditions, has to be confirmed with public security for each stop. Blog posts are not a substitute.
